The brilliant red blooms make a stunning backdrop for shorter plants in a garden bed or along a fence line. In a meadow, its tall flowers bloom in early to mid summer, heralding the start of high summer. Each flower consists of a narrow tube that flares open to a five-petal star. Flowers are scarlet red, some with speckles of yellow on the inside. Individual plants are biennial, but they will self-sow to create a permanent planting.
