Pycnanthemum muticum, Blunt Leaf Mountain Mint, is a rising star in horticulture. Though the plant has been widely grown in the native plant gardening circles of the East, it has seen little use out West. We intend to change that: this species offers a long, summer bloom of near-white, nectar-rich flowers that are highly valuable to native pollinators. Surrounding its flowers are attractive, shimmering silvery bracts that add weeks to the visual interest of the plant. Blunt Leaf Mountain Mint spreads slowly by runners along the soil surface to make large clumps, but doesn’t present the troublesome, aggressive nature of its true mint cousins. Grows best with moderate moisture and full sun though it does tolerate periodic drought well. Excellent addition to prairie and meadow plantings, wildlife gardens, and perennial borders in the Midwest, plains states, and Pacific Northwest.
